sculpting your avatar’s perfect face

Original post @ THE DMC BLOG.

Perfectly groomed eyebrows balance your features and frame your eyes.

You might think that I am a bit obsessed considering this is my second posting about creating our avatar’s perfect eyebrows, and maybe I am…. but I have a sound reason to be so focused on those often over-looked facial details.  You see, eyebrows are probably one of the most important features on any face.

And they serve more then just one purpose.
Eyebrows set the frame for the other features of the face.  Shaped correctly they can enhance your eyes, and highlight your cheekbones.  They can also do just the opposite.  Most eye brows go relatively unnoticed unless they aren’t shaped right.  Eyebrows that are too thin can make the whole face look older, while fuller brows give a more youthful look.

Besides enhancing or detracting from our beauty, eyebrows are an important part of our non verbal communications.  It can be the model’s expression that promotes an advertisement more then any other feature used to catch the reader’s eye.
Believe it or not, this even true in virtual ads and vendor board ad pictures.

*Four steps to perfectly shaped eye brows: modified to work in a virtual world where you can manipulate the avatar shape.

First Step: Marking the inner edge.

After you have placed your avatar in a stationary pose, use your camera to look at her (or him) straight in the face.  Zoom in as close as you can and still see the Avi’s face.  Either use your imagination or hold a straight object like a pencil up to your screen, (do NOT write on your screen) and imagine a straight line along side the nose from the outer edge of the nostril to the inner edge of the eyebrow.
Second Step: Marking the outer edge.

Then either rotate the object or pretend to rotate an object from the outer edge of the nostril to the outer edge of the eye… making sure to visualize the straight line continuing to the hair base.  The part where it intersects with the brow bone is where the eyebrow edge should be.

Make sure your avi’s eyes are looking straight forward.  Again, pretend to, imagine, or actually hold a straight object like a pencil, perpendicular along side the other edge of the iris up to the eyebrow to mark where the arch should begin.

The thickness of your eyebrow ends up being a personal preference.  The make up artists haven’t set any rule denoting the “width” of the brow.

Preferences regarding the thickness, arch and width will vary from person to person, but your face shape should be one of the top determiners of your brow shape. There is no rulebook that says you MUST shape your brows one way because you have a certain face shape, but these are just guidelines and tips to help bring out your strongest features and pull your look together.

**Heart Face

Soft, rounded brows will add to the femininity of the heart face. Your brows should work in conjunction with your pointy chin to frame your face perfectly. A lower arch will suit you best if you have a long heart shaped face.

**Long Face
Your face has enough height naturally, so you don’t need arches. A straight brow that is thick and neat will help add some width to your face, but if you really want some curve, make it subtle.

**Oval Face

Oval faces don’t have many restrictions since they are so proportional.

**Round Face

In contrast with long faces, round faces need height. High angled arches will give you some height, while a more rounded arch will make your face appear even rounder.

**Square Face

Your jaw line is very defined and prominent, so you should maintain the equilibrium with thick, well-defined brows and a moderately angled arch (not too high). If you would rather soften your prominent features, you can opt for a soft, rounded arch.

**Diamond faces are very angular around the cheekbone area, so round
brows with a high peak will increase the width of your forehead and chin
areas to balance and frame your face.

EYEBROWS MATCHING

Original post @ THE DMC BLOG.
Eyebrows are one of the most defining features a person has. They frame the face, convey emotion, and, when shaped properly, make the eyes look brighter and the cheekbones more defined. Speaking in terms of physical features, nothing—other than a full head of hair, perhaps—is more integral in one’s youthful good looks than a great set of eyebrows. And remember Models, there is a difference between looking male and looking female!

Here are some tips to help make the most of yours;

Arch the Right Way:  look closely at your Avi’s face.  Imagine holding a pencil straight up and down right along the outer edge of your iris. The point where the pencil hits “her” brow is where your arch should be.

Stopping Point: The eyebrows need to end at the same place where the brow bone does. If they’re shorter they’ll look oddly rectangular. Too long? You run the risk of looking droopy eyed.

Lighten Up!: A lot of women use eyebrow tattoos, or eyebrow skins in entirely the wrong shade, either too dark or absolutely different then the hair “base” color.  A good rule of thumb is that you want to go with a color that’s a shade or two lighter than the color of your hair. (and remember, go with what is the color of the hair base, not what makeup you have on your avi.

Here’s a link to some Skin sales that have the right approach to eyebrows + skin tones + hair base!

below, on the left side of the picture are two pictures of contradicting eyebrow tones and hair colors, on the right I switched the eyebrows, did a little work on them in GIMP……. and you be the judge!
