Wolf’s Rain Dub

Wolf’s Rain
Genres: adventure, drama, science fiction, supernatural
Themes: Post-Apocalyptic
Plot Summary: In some distant future, it’s common knowledge that all wolves have been extinct for 200 years. However, it seems this is false as wolves have not disappeared but rather have taken human form. Kiba, a lone wolf, wanders into a city, trying to sniff out the Lunar Flowers that are supposed to lead whoever follows the scent to paradise. The source of the smell is Cheza, a girl who sleeps in what appears to be suspended animation in a lab. She and the wolves are drawn to each other, and Kiba hopes to find paradise once he finds the source of the scent of Lunar Flowers. However, once Kiba finds Cheza, she is kidnapped by a mysterious person called Darcia, and his search begins anew. Before he leaves the city, he meets 3 other wolves, Tsume, Hige and Toboe. All four wolves have very different personalities and ideas, and their friendliness towards each other is a little rough around the edges. However, they soon band together to continue to search for paradise.

Wow, this piece of writing is fastidious, my younger sister
is analyzing these kinds of things, so I am going to convey her.

This is one ambitious and sophisticated piece of anime. Though I don’t understand all of the allusions to Chinese/ Japanese myths, I think it is an interesting concept to have wolves as the protagonists of a story. While their basic goal – the search for paradise – is rather simple in and of itself, I love how the plot gradually develops and turns out to be a lot more complex than it seems at the begnning. Also, while some think it is a bad thing, the anime takes its time for presenting the background, circumstances and its characters. You can wonderfully see how their relationships to each other develop – you get to understand and thus, like each one of them, while nothing about their relationship to each other or the development seems contrived. And even though the story is set in an alternate universe (at least it dabbles in both the sci-fi and fantasy genre), you can immerse in it without any problems as everything goes together very well and draws a coherent, believeable picture. The journey the wolves and flower maiden undertake is epic (in the most basic sense of the word), poetic, philosophic and full of life. It approaches the viewer on an emotional, rather than rational level and appeals to one of the most basic questions and problems that we have today: Is there a place like “paradise” or “heaven”? What am I ready to sacrifice for it, without having the slightest guarantee that it even exists? How far will and can I go, even though it may be hell that I’m headed towards? How important are my friends along the journey, are they prepared to do what it takes to get to paradise or is the price too high?
As for the ending… let’s say it’s very dramatic. Some like it, some don’t. Be that as it may, the most important thing about it is that it all makes sense and is memorable, to say the least.
Though it also has its minor flaws, you can, in my opinion, overlook them withour problems as Wolf’s Rain is the perfect example for the category: Art is more than the sum of its parts. And Wolf’s rain is, as a wonderfully cohesive and poetic piece of art, way more than that.
